1. Lithiary MP3 excerpt, 2.48MB (46:14)

Recorded September thru November 2004.

Cover photo by Jeph Jerman, inside photo by Julie Schubert.

This is Jeph Jerman's second outing on Fargone, and his first solo disc for me. It's a gorgeous one, very similar to his Anomalous disc Instability Studies. The entirety of Lithiary was recorded using a shaketable that had been loaded up with stones, creating a creaking, rattling collage of textural sound. This disc consists of two separate overdubbed but otherwise unprocessed shaketable recordings, building up a very dense sound that seems to be constantly changing and shifting even as the overall atmosphere remains steady. It's a hypnotic and enveloping piece, at once concerned with tiny details and the overall pounding drone. Comes in a white gatefold sleeve with a real photographic print by Jeph on the cover, and more rock artwork inside, a very fitting accompaniment to this stark, lovely music.
